ABOUT US

Founded in 2013, a group of five passionate law students at the University of Auckland saw an opportunity for students to become more involved in one of the most important skills they could learn as lawyers: advocacy.

Now, in 2020, the University of Auckland Mooting Society has become one of the largest clubs at Auckland Law School, running five prestigious moots aimed at facilitating and developing mooting and advocacy. The benefits of the society are immense, including opportunities to travel to international competitions, attending seminars and social events, and learning areas of law that may not be taught in class.

To the best of our knowledge, the Mooting Society is the first of its kind at any of the New Zealand law schools.

OUR VISION AND VALUES

Our vision is to maintain an accessible and inclusive Mooting Society geared towards developing talented advocates. Any law student, regardless of background, should feel comfortable enough to enter and believe they can do well with the resources that Mooting Society provides. In that regard, we are driven by our three core values of advocating, engaging, and growing.

ADVOCATE

Advocacy is at the heart of what it means to moot. Historically, moots have focused on commercial law, but we believe it is critical for mooting problems to reflect the interests of Auckland Law School’s student body. Our newly introduced Social Issues moot aims to reach a wider audience by making the topic more accessible, and to improve our students’ knowledge of the issues we face today.

ENGAGE

We engage students who don’t fit the mould of a ‘typical’ mooter; people who are interested but don’t know where to begin. We aim to reduce perceived barriers by running more development sessions prior to moots, having a stronger relationship with Ti Rakau Turei and the Pacific Island Law Students Association, and ensuring that the Society and judges reflect the diversity found at the Law School. Ultimately, our goal is to democratise the mooting process so that every law student feels comfortable enough to moot.

GROW

At some point in a law student’s academic career, they will come across mooting. Growing means tangibly developing all our mooters from competing in the Junior Moot to the Stout Shield. We will provide a coaching pipeline where older law students mentor and coach younger law students, and run a ‘Moot Camp’ for those with little to no mooting experience. Through these initiatives, we intend to create a culture of excellence through improvement.
