MOOTING OPPORTUNITIES

While at Law School, students must participate in moots during Part II courses and faculty moots later on. The Mooting Society aims to provide students with a chance to practice before these compulsory moots and also offer workshops that students can attend to prepare for compulsory course of faculty moots.

COMPETITION EXPLANATIONS

Justice Sir Robert Chambers Memorial Moot (First Year Moot)

The Mooting Society runs the First Year Moot. Provided for students currently enrolled in Law 131 and 141, this is an excellent chance to develop some of the most important skills that will be needed over four years of law school, before you even get there. If that's not enough, there's also a prize. Students compete in teams of two (but can be assigned a partner if needed), and will tackle a problem that relates to elements of the 131 casebook.

Junior Moot

The Junior Moot is often competitors first mooting experience. Based on an area of law that can be found in a Part II course, the Junior Moot gives you an opportunity to practice your advocacy skills.

John Haigh Memorial Moot

The John Haigh Memorial Moot is another of the competitions run by the Mooting Society. It was established in 2014, in memoriam of John Haigh QC, an alumnus of the Auckland Law School and a leading barrister. It aims to bridge the gap between the Junior Moot and Stout Shield. With complicated criminal legal issues, the John Haigh Memorial Moot is at a higher level than the Junior Moot. It is open entry to those in their second year of Part II, and Part III. This is the ideal moot to develop and advance your skills. The winner of the moot is awarded a prize. In 2020, the moot was run online. You can access a recording of the finals here.

The Stout Shield

The Stout Shield is the most prestigious mooting competition at law school. Traditionally reserved for those completing the advocacy paper, the Stout Shield is the premier internal mooting competition at the University of Auckland. The finalists present at the High Court, in front of members of the High Court Bench. This moot selects the team to represent Auckland at the Bell Gully National Mooting Competition, the winners of which go on to represent New Zealand in the world’s largest and most prestigious moot court contest, the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Competition held in Washington D.C.

Greg Everard Memorial Moot

The Greg Everard Memorial Moot was established in recognition of Greg Everard’s practice as counsel in civil and commercial cases. Since its inception in 2003 — through the generosity of Greg's family, friends and colleagues — the Everard Memorial Moot has enabled competitors to test their appellate advocacy in hypothetical civil litigation. The final of the Moot continues to attract large numbers of Greg's colleagues and friends — as well as students from the Faculty of Law. There are prizes too! Entrants must have already participated in one of the Faculty’s moots, including moots offered in the elective courses. Past winners of the Greg Everard Memorial Moot are not able to participate for a second time.
